In praise of Battlestar Galactica

One of my favourite things about Battlestar Galactica in its current form is that it’s both an established classic and a whole new, compelling show. A bit like Doctor Who, I’m of a generation that missed the show the first time round, which means that I experienced the contemporary BSG as a whole, fresh new thing – and my experience has been all the better for that.

For those who’ve not seen it, the first seasons of BSG revolve around a relatively simple plot – a war between the human population of the “Twelve Colonies”and the robotic Cylons – who are colloquially known to their human enemies as “toasters”. The events of the series are imagined to take place some twenty years after the previous war against the Cylons. At the end of this war, the toasters were banished to a far world – from which they suddenly escape at the beginning of the new series to launch a surprise attack against the Colonies. Nearly all of humanity is wiped out in the sudden attack; only a small fleet of civilian ships, protected by the Battlestar Galactica, an antiquated military starship, make an escape. Constantly on the run, and harried by continual Cylon attacks, the humans aboard the Galactica make a terrifying discovery – that the Cylons have worked out a way to create robots that look like, act like, and sometimes even believe themselves to be, human beings.

It’s a terrific analogy for the “War on Terror”, and has brilliant combat sequences, top notch character development and snappy dialogue. A modern classic.

Vampire and zombies and aliens and stuff

Sci-Fi some think is a pure imagination. It doesn’t exist. Surely it does, I’m not saying that vampires and aliens exist. I don’t know about aliens but vampires? Who knows, but for now I don’t care. These creatures or creations purely in the mind in a form of inception are actually true characters in the real world.
They are representations of people like us. Their existence in movies and books are risen out of imagination of oppressors and the oppressed. Didn’t think of that did you. Alien, it is a representation of the women who were suppressed, not allowed to work and were deemed fit to produce babies and work at home. The alien who are all females in gender is the representation of the women burst of the cages that men made, they are out get what they want.
Vampires lead a life of the night, things the youngster like to do and were prevented from doing so. They represent endless youth, immortality to some extent as well as the life of young kid heavy on hormones. Their are often associated with night clubs, music, sex, alcohol, drugs and lust. The things of the devil. They also represent the oppressive nature of some countries which prevent their people from leading lifestyles that don’t associate with these standards of living (Middle East).
You could ask a film specialist and confirm what I write. Although some critics say that sci-fi isn’t the type of film that will grab much of their attention due to the very nature of it’s unreal-ness (just made that word up), little do they know that they are representations of living people, the ones who control and the ones are being controlled. Special Needs Teaching Jobs surely doesn’t cover this but it’s a great example for creativity.

Freaky creatures

Freaky creatures

Most of the heroes in sci-fi are dashing, handsome men, who seduce or blast their way to success, or sexy heroines in gold bikinis and Danish pastries on the side of their head. Or they could be ultra cool in shades and a long trench coat to hide all those weapons or clad in skin-tight PVC, cartwheeling into battle. All very pretty, but if we’re honest, it’s the bad guys that really make sci fi movies science fiction, rather than just a different take on classic stories…

Star Wars is the best example (isn’t it always?) but if you took away Darth Vader, Boba Fett, Jabba the Hutt and the Emperor, it would just be like any old morality tale, the battle between Good and Evil. The freaky creatures do make it far more interesting! I’ve spent many viewings of “Return of the Jedi” trying to figure out what has made the Emperor look the crazy way he does. Some kind of pace disaster? The effects of the dark side of the Force? Or maybe just a Botox job gone horribly wrong??

So, this blog is dedicated to all the space villains out there; Ming the Merciless (probably one of the more handsome bad guys, I must admit), all the aliens from the Alien movies and the disturbingly beautiful Borg Queen.

There are always exceptions that prove the rule. A bad guy that is so bad he doesn’t need to spend hours in make-up or drive onto the set in a metal cage like a Dalek. My favourite sci-fi bad guy of all time looks great, though I admit he’s not everyone’s cup of tea. I’ve always gone for the older guy, so my favourite sexy sci-fi villain was always going to be…..KHAN!!!!!

Abduction

Abduction

The first book that I read from Robin Cook was abduction. The theme is simple and the story is straight. A crew is sent down into the ocean to change the drill bit on an oil rig. As the crew goes down, something goes wrong, the crew’s diving ship suddenly loses power and is sucked into the depths of the Atlantic waters.
When the crew regains conciousness, they find themselves in a different city which under water. The residents who are human themselves calm to have a land better than Atlantis, the mythical underwater city. The people are all in weirdly good mood, the only thing they do is drink and party. While the entire crew is lured into the perfect world, the main character – Perry -along with a few other crew members try to escape the city, which they aren’t allowed to do
The fast paced page turning Sci-Fi novel is quite gripping. It is good book to start if it the first time your reading Sci-Fi. Although not the best of Robin Cook, it just goes to show the level of creativity of the writer. His vocabulary and writing style is easy to read, understandable and at the same time gripping to read. The expressions used in the book are very realistically expressed. It is a great joy to read, but this isn’t one of those books you would read again or recommend to your friends, it just goes on the list of books you’ve read at your reading club meeting.
Since the book was released in 2000, it is available in every small to big book shop and even on online shops like Amazon and eBay for as little as 99p. So while you park your New Jazz Hybrid cross the street while you wait to pick up your kid from school, make sure you have the book on your side to kill time.

Gifting a Science Fiction Fan

Gifting a Science Fiction Fan

For years, Science Fiction fans have proved themselves to be of a different breed than any other genre. There have been religions set up to pay homage, such as, to Yoda and his wisdom; there are recognised languages such as Cling-On. There are conferences and events specifically for the fans of Science Fiction. There just isn’t that kind of enthusiasm with any other genre. Sure, there is a huge following with romance novels or horror but not to the same extent as Science Fiction. The hype surrounding Sci-Fi is incredible and overwhelming for anyone to be a part of. Attend any Science Fiction seminar and you will be met by swarms of people all dressed up in their favourite characters costume, imitating the character and perhaps even speaking in an alien language. It really is a sight to behold and further emphasises the fact that Science Fiction fans are the best fans in the world.

If you are looking for a gift for a loved one who is a Science Fiction fan then why not organise some kind of sci-fi based party? A close friend of mine told me that Star Trek events were very popular with stag parties. There are many things which you could gift a Science Fiction fan and it all depends on where their passion lays. Should they be a Star Trek fan then it is important to find out if they are a fan of the original Star Trek or Next Generation or even, Voyager. The same can be said for fans of Star Wars. Each Sci-Fi fan will have a different passion. Should the passion be for Douglas Adams or Jules Verne, each person will love that you paid attention and gifted them something specifically suited to match their passion. There are hundreds of gifting possibilities, each one tailored for the individual passion.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Obvilion

The Elder Scrolls IV: Obvilion

The Elder Scrolls IV: Obvilion is the fourth game from the series of The Elder Scrolls and is one of the games that have been accepted as complete masterpieces in the gaming industry, especially in the PS3 gaming societies. In the famous Gametrackers ( http://www.gamestracker.com/ps3-top-games.htm ) chart, the game has been put on fourth position among the top PS3 games ever released which is evident for its quality and the satisfaction gamers get from it.

The game is developed and produced by Bethesda Game Studios and, as mentioned, is the fourth game from the series and was released in March 2006. The game is supported by Playstation 3 and Xbox consoles and, for the satisfaction of the laptops and desk computer owners, the game is also running on Microsoft Windows systems (too bad for Mac owners who, unfortunately, would not be able to run the game). There is no particular connection between the fourth and the third part even though the action takes place in the fictional continent of Tamriel which was the same in the previous parts of the title.

The plot of the game, which I would not describe in details, is mainly centred around the mission of your character to save the world (how usual and yet so amazing). You will be fighting agains a demonic cult that aims to unlock a gate and connect the realm of the mortals with a hellish world and thus bring destruction upon mankind. Your character would have to face the different challenges of being a hero and save humankind from the evil threat hanging upon it.

The decent graphic (not to forget that the release date is 2006), the fascinating plot and the ability to freely play even without taking the plot line into consideration, made this game a total hit among PS3 players and still keeps being one of the most appreciated games in the gaming industry.
