If you hear the constant noise of planes taking off and landing, then you will probably think that you are currently located in the airport taxi Heathrow stand. On the other hand, if you hear a large number of trains moving to and fro, you will probably conclude that you are in the railway station. In the same way, readers often judge the book and the content that it offers by focusing on the cover. This is where the role of the artist enters the picture. Just look at the covers of science-fiction books and you will find a futuristic worlds that have absolutely no relation to the current world we are living in.

Yet, there will invariably be an object that you will be in a position to identify as belonging to your world. It may even be the head of an individual in a space suit or a structure that resembles the space suit. Other parts of the cover will be completely incomprehensible but our mind will tell us that it is feasible just because we have seen a human being or a human being like creature on the cover.

Emphasis is usually on outlandish shapes and objects that have absolutely no connection with a book. In some cases, the cover of the book will match the contents within. In other cases, there will be no correlation whatsoever and everything will be based on the imagination of the artist.

During the 1940s and 50s, science fiction writers in Soviet Union came up with numerous science fiction books that was actually a satire on the western capitalistic world. There were numerous attempts to indicate that capitalism will be a problem not just in this planet but on other planets as well. Of course, communism was always around to save the day. These science-fiction books can hardly be described as being representative of what the future holds for us. As on date, Communism has ceased to exist and the entire world has acknowledged that will there must be a mix of capitalism and socialism.

In such a scenario, you must try to understand science fiction from this perspective. You must try to understand that it is, at the end of the day, reflective of how we see ourselves and how we perceive our future world will be. Whether the predictions will come out true or not is irrelevant. Of course, there were no references to the political set up in science-fiction movies written by famous authors like Jules Verne. We were free to imagine the political set up anyway we wanted. 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea spoke of how man continued to be suppressed by autocratic governments but there was no mention about the specific nature of the government in question.

The Journey To The Center Of The Earth focused on the British political system but the emphasis was on exploring more about the earth and less about commenting on how the world and its various institutions worked.

Very few science fiction novels speak of lasting peace and harmony on the planet. Our tendency to fight amongst ourselves is presumed to be a permanent characteristic. Of course, we have, in the past few thousands of years, never showed the tendency to live together as a peaceful race. Science fiction writers understood this and incorporated war and peace as a part of our future lives as well. The year 2000 AD was often used as the benchmark for all science fiction content. Ironically, the decade starting from the year 2000 AD has seen constant fighting amongst ourselves.

Another thing that science fiction anticipated was the disparity between the rich and the poor. We have never read about science fiction that speaks of individuals not wearing cheap fitted wardrobes any longer. Economic disparity between individuals and nations was also treated as a permanent and enduring feature of our existence. This clearly indicates how these writers have understood our species properly.

It also gives an indication that science fiction should not just focus on future developments but should also focus on those features and characteristics that shall remain constant. This is the real benchmark to test the quality of fiction that focuses on the future.

The famous American author Orson Scott Card has been in the news recently when he revealed ‘Laddertop’, his new graphic science fiction novel. This new novel will look at a number of concepts related to extraordinary children that happened to be put in extraordinary situations. The first volume of this novel is expected to appeal to many young adult readers that use l’oreal majirel, especially young female adults. This is because the novel features a pair of 11-year girls.

In fact, the name ‘Laddertops'really means four space stations that are located thousands of miles into space. They had been constructed a quarter of a century previously by an alien race known as the Givers, which strangely disappeared soon after these stations were finished. The gift of these aliens was that they could wipe-out poverty and pollution.

Meanwhile, these Laddertop stations are designed in such a way that only children that possess the skills the training can keep them operating. The story focuses on the special adventure of students Azure and Robbi, who attend Deerfield Middle School. All of a sudden, they are sent to Laddertop Academy where they must compete with one another for jobs that require them to administer the Laddertop stations, keeping power flowing back to Earth.

The novel is described as a cliff-hanger and is likely to leave its readers yearning for the next edition. The author admits that this novel includes certain depictions of space sickness when the children are engaged in their zero-gravity training programmes. However, ‘Laddertop'should be popular with the younger generation, although older readers that use l’oreal majirel may have trouble familiarising themselves with the concept of ‘manga-like'graphics. Children often find it easier to identify with science fiction novels than most adults; this is because children are generally more familiar with virtual reality concepts like computer games and consoles.

What a graphic book it is! I truly enjoyed it and I must say the combination between Sci Fi, fantasy, western and Gothic motives has produced spectacular results. The main characters seem to have had the opportunity to get their designer suit collections by Alexander McQueen – a truly well made comic book Priest is!

The book is designed, written and completely made by a Korean comic writer. He has incorporated several styles and techniques in his novels describing various events in corresponding cartooning techniques and methods. The overall edgy illustrations are making the comic look even better and I must admit that combining the particular features of several historic periods and genres has turned out to be quite successful.

The plot tells the story of Ivan Isaacs – a priest trained by the Church to defend mankind against 12 fallen angels. The basics of the story are related with the love that God has for mankind – this makes 12 angels from heavens to fall on earth and, blinded by envy for not receiving the most of God’s love, to initiate a war against humanity. Ivan Isaacs is the protagonist and the leader of the angels is his main opposing force – their struggle for domination and the desire for Ivan to revenge his personal loss lead them to a series of spectacularly depicted adventures.

The comic books were also incorporated slightly in a similar story for the big screens in the movie “Priest” where a highly trained priest fights against the long mankind enemy – the vampires.

The comic book is extremely successful among comic lovers and offers the best of experience for comic lovers. A truly spectacular work by Korean comic art specialists.

Okay, here’s one that’s a little more substantial. For those of you who don’t feel like clicking, researchers at Duke University have figured out how to build an invisibility cloak. Sci fi brethren everywhere, rejoice! WHY ISN’T IT IN OUR HANDS? (Okay, so it’s not truly an invisibility cloak, but the idea is there, and who knows what they’re NOT showing us . . .)

At my sister’s wedding recently, I ran into an old friend who was telling me about her sister. “She works for a company that contracts with the Defense Department,” my friend told me. “Sometimes we’ll joke with her about when the giant transforming robots are coming. She’ll just give us a look.” The implication, of course, is that THESE THINGS ARE BEING DEVELOPED AND MAY WELL ALREADY EXIST.

Again, I ask, why don’t we have them? Why do we have hybrid cars and GPS’s instead of flying cars and transforming robots? Why do I have to live in a (relatively) boring world, where I have to turn on a six-year-old computer to fly around a city?

Somebody get me the Department of Defense of the phone . . .

If you tell someone you are going to a comic book convention they may get an image of you being a nerd who likes to surround yourself with other nerds. But they would have no idea how huge comic book and sci fi conventions are today. These conventions held all over the world are fast becoming launching pads for movies, television and anything in the comic/sci fi universe.

Do you want to see your favorite Science Fiction celebrities? Well you can, many of them are at these conventions. Often there will be panels where actors from TV shows and movies will share their behind the scene stories. There may also be a chance for audience to ask questions to these celebrities. If you want to get closer to these celebrities you can always visit their autograph table and maybe get a picture along with their autograph.

You will also find people who dress up as their favorite characters. You may meet stormtroopers, Superman, Klingons or the X-men. These costumes are not cheap; people spend much time on it and get them professionally designed like you would get a professional designer homeware to design your kitchen.

These comic book conventions are becoming larger and larger. Thousands of people are flocking to them just to catch a glimpse of their favorite celebrities or to hang out with Spider-man. As these conventions grow more popular it becomes vital that anyone making a science fiction or a comic book movie and television show must be there.

Currently, they contain some of the most extensive wisdom in the sci fi culture and the language and scientific explanations that are revealed there remain surprisingly accurate even in the advanced modern era of communication and technology.

The plot of the books is always circulating around space travel, robotics, artificial intelligence, discovery of unexplained natural phenomenon and different aspects of life on other plants. Definitely, also focusing on the human psychology of advanced research and virtue enrichment, the books remain a socialogically influencing factors for people who are seeking for promotion of human values in different aspects.

If we ever do make ‘contact'with extra-terrestrial life, then I wonder what it will actually look like? The Science Fiction genre has existed for many years and authors have dreamt up all manner of different ‘life-forms’; from clunky and robotic ‘humanoids'to insectile or reptilian creatures. Of course, the beauty of it is that no-one knows if there are aliens out there… let alone what they look like!

And then there is the personality side of it all to consider… Most Sci-Fi writers would agree that aliens must have a higher intellect than us, especially if they are capable of travelling through time and space. But what sort of creatures would they be; kind and peaceful or sadistic and cruel? There have been countless stories written about both! Would they bend over backwards to help us find: a cure to cancer, a way of living without wars and a realistic mobile roaming solution ? Or would they be far more interested in eating our brains, burning our furniture and stealing the elastic from our grandmothers'knickers? (Well, it’s possible, isn’t it???)

Personally, I hope we never get to meet alien beings. This is not because I’m scared (although perhaps my grandmother should be), but because it would totally ruin Science Fiction overnight!!! It would make every Sci-Fi story woefully inaccurate and it would also place serious limits on this wonderfully imaginative genre.

So, if there are any extra-terrestrials reading this; get lost! We don’t want you coming down here spoiling our books and films!
